Thomasville

The National Main Street Center was established in 1980 as a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation to address issues facing older and historic downtowns. The Georgia Main Street Program was one of the original pilot programs, beginning with five local communities. Today, there are over 100 Georgia Main Street Programs. The Thomasville Main Street Program began in 1981.

The Main Street program focuses on the core principles of downtown revitalization, implemented through comprehensive work in four areas known as the Four Points. These Four Points are Design, Organization, Promotion, and Economic Restructuring.

Each year, the National Main Street Center recognizes exceptional Main Street communities whose successes serve as a model for comprehensive, preservation-based commercial districts. This recognition is known as the Great American Main Street Award (GAMSA). Since the award's inception in 1995, 100 Main Street programs have been honored. In 1998, Thomasville was the first Georgia city to earn this honor. Thomasville's Main Street program has also been recognized as a Georgia Exceptional Main Street (GEMS) community, representing one of the best of the Georgia Main Street programs.

As a Main Street America Accredited program, Thomasville Main Street is a recognized leading program among the national network of more than 1,500 neighborhoods and communities who share both a commitment to creating high-quality places and to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development. All Main Street America Accredited programs meet a set of National Accreditation Standards of Performance as outlined by the National Main Street Center.

The Thomasville Main Street Program's Mission is to foster and enhance the authentic identity and historic character of downtown Thomasville. Downtown Thomasville will be a dynamic and creative city center where people want to live, aspire to work, love to play and long to return.

Movie Night at The Ritz In December of 2021 we hosted our first Family Movie Night at The Ritz as part of our Christmas in Thomasville events. The movie night was a huge success, so we decided to do two more in the Fall of 2022 in conjunction with our Halloween and Christmas in Thomasville events.
  • We plan to make Movie Night at The Ritz a quarterly event in 2023.
  • Planter signs were ordered to advertise for Movie Night at The Ritz.
Plaques Installed in 200 Block of West Jackson Street Sidewalk plaques listing important historical businesses in the district were part of the vision for the overall revitalization of The Bottom District.
  • This year, 24 historic business plaques were purchased and installed in the 200 block of West Jackson Street by funding from The Williams Family Foundation.
"Treat Yourself in Thomasville" Marketing Campaign Our Marketing Department launched a new campaign to encourage visitors and locals to "Treat Yourself in Thomasville" over the summer. With this campaign, we designed Summer Loyalty Cards accepted between June 1st and August 31st. After spending $200, completed cards were turned in to the Thomasville Visitor's Center for a chance to win a weekend stay at the Downtown Courtyard by Marriott.
Downtown Development District Expansion This expansion followed the Blueprint Comprehensive Plan, the Downtown Strategic Plan for revitalization and the opportunity for future growth within identified gateways into the downtown.
  • The Downtown Development Authority approved the expansion of our Downtown Development District. The new map was adopted on April 11, 2022, by City Council.
  • We continue to reach out to the new businesses within the Downtown Development District to make them aware of Downtown Incentives.
  • We have plans to launch a Holiday Loyalty Card that will be available between November 1st and December 31st.
